Often aromatic. Stems square. Leaves usually undivided, in opposite pairs. Flowers with both petals and sepals, normally 2-lipped and open-mouthed though Ajuga and Teucrium have both upper lip absent or very short but lower lip 3-lobed and 5-lobed respectively. Fruit four-nutlets.
