Leaves strongly veined or ribbed, all in basal rosette except Plantago arenaria. Flowers tiny, 4-petalled, in dense spikes or heads, on long leafless stalks (except Plantago arenaria), with porminent stamens providing most of the colour. Fruit a capsule.
